I have been an avid Invite Postcard sender on my neighborhood’s Nextdoor site. In the hopes that I can reel more people in I have rewritten the invite so that it doesn’t sound so canned. While writing this I discovered the 400 word limit and thus had to pair my pitch down. Here is the progression of my writing.

Original pitch

Our neighborhood is using a private online network called Nextdoor Estates At Settlers Park, and we think you’ll benefit from joining us. On our Nextdoor site, neighbors share community events, recommendations, items for sale/free, crime/safety concerns, ideas about how to make our neighborhood better, and more. Please join us to build a better neighborhood!

Draft 1

I basically wrote what I tell people in person when I invite them to the website.

I live down the street from you and wanted to invite you to our neighborhood website! This is NOT the HOA website but a new service where we as a neighborhood can communicate and get to know each other. Do you know that over 125 people in our neighborhood have already joined our Nextdoor site? The site would be even better if you were apart of it! Just accept this invitation and you will take the next step in being apart of your community.

Draft 2

I liked the sentence about all the things that we did on the website and wanted to include it.

Draft 3

I thought I was done but then discovered the Send Postcards and Preview buttons were grayed out and unclickable. This is where I discovered the 400 word limit. This is the version I finally -used.

Draft 4

To add that last personal touch I though I would add my name to it (duh!).
Hi! This is Dan down the street from you on Cami Path. I wanted to invite you to our neighborhood Nextdoor.com website. There, that sounds nice and inviting. Will the time I spent make the difference between someone joining the website or not? Who knows, my hope is that it will though.
Feel free to pickup where I left off for your neighborhood website. Don’t have a neighborhood website? No problem! You setup a free one here at Nextdoor.com.
